Geographical Background

Ilocos Region (Region I) came into existence on September 24, 1972 when provinces of the Philippines were organized into 11 regions by Presidential Decree No.1 of the Integrated Plan of President Ferdinand Marcos.

Region I is located in the northwest of Luzon. In its eastern borders are regions of Cordillera Administrative Region and Cagayan Valley and in the south is Central Luzon. To the west north is the West Philippine Sea.

In 2016, palay production was recorded at 1,805,126 metric tons or up by 1.58 percent from the previous year's level. Area harvested decreased by 0.07 percent to 412,635 hectares. Corn production at 508,024 metric tons expanded by 3.48 percent while area harvested at 89,769 hectares increased by 2.47 percent.

The region's agricultural production declined by 2.03 percent in 2016. Except for the livestock subsector, all the other subsectors recorded output reduction. The crops subsector with 59.0 percent contribution to the region's agricultural production was down by 2.37 percent. An increase of 1.98 percent was registered in the livestock subsector. It shared 12.78 percent in output.
