Geographical Background

Region X, known as Northern Mindanao in the Executive Order No. 36, Section 2, occupies the north-central part of Mindanao Island. The region is composed of the provinces of Bukidnon, Camiguin, Lanao del Norte, Misamis Occidental and Misamis Oriental. It has two (2) urbanized cities, namely, Cagayan de Oro City and Iligan City and seven (7) component cities: El Salvador City, Gingoog City, Malaybalay City, Oroquieta City, Tangub City, and Valencia City. The total number of municipalities and barangays are 84 and 2,022, respectively. It is bounded by the Mindanao Sea on the north , Western Mindanao on the west, Caraga Region on the east, and Regions XI and XII on the south.

In 2016, Northern Mindanao had 3.8 percent share to the country's Gross Domestic Product. The region's economy improved by 7.6 percent. Agriculture, Hunting, Forestry and Fishing sector grew by 2.4 percent. The sector accounted for 21.9 percent of the region's total output.

In 2016, palay production in Region X at 711,284 metric tons was 1.91 percent lower compared with the 2015 level. Palay area at 160,209 hectares was reduced by 2.17 percent. Production of corn at 1,223,116 metric tons slightly increased by 0.56 percent while area harvested went down to 370,806 hectares by 1.65 percent.

Agricultural production in Northern Mindanao increased by 2.01 percent in 2016. This was attributed to the positive growths posted by all subsectors. The crops subsector which accounted for 58.16 percent of the region's total agricultural output inched up by 0.65 percent. Nearly 15 percent share each was noted for the livestock and poultry subsectors while 12.40 percent for the fisheries subsector. Production growth was highest in poultry subsector at 4.20 percent.

The top five (5) commodities produced in Northern Mindanao namely: banana, pineapple, corn, chicken and hog comprised 56.79 percent of the region's total agricultural output in 2016. Northern Mindanao was the country's top producer of pineapple. Meanwhile, the region was ranked second in banana and corn production and third in chicken and hog production.
