Geographical Background

Davao Region, designated as Region XI, consists of five (5) provinces and six (6) cities, namely: Compostela Valley, Davao del Norte, Davao Oriental, Davao del Sur, and the newly created Davao Occidental, and the Cities of Davao, Panabo, Tagum, Digos, Mati, and Island Garden City of Samal. It is located in the southeastern portion of the island of Mindanao surrounding the Davao Gulf. It is bounded on the north by the provinces of Surigao del Sur, Agusan del Sur, and Bukidnon, on the east by the Philippine Sea, and on the west by the Central Mindanao provinces.

In 2016, Davao Region's economy improved by 9.4 percent. The region contributed 4.1 percent to the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Agriculture, Hunting, Forestry, and Fishing sector which accounted for 12.2 percent of the region's total output, posted a 1.3 percent reduction in 2016.

Palay production in 2016 went down to 417,948 metric tons or lower by 5.41 percent from the 2015 level. Area harvested at 97,789 hectares decreased by 1.44 percent. Corn production at 219,089 metric tons in 2016 was 2.24 percent less than the previous year's record. Area harvested inched up by 0.12 percent and reached 154,584 hectares in 2016.

In 2016, agricultural production in Davao Region was down by 1.53 percent. The crops subsector comprised 66.47 percent of the region's agricultural output. It registered a 2.93 percent reduction. Production declines were also noted in the poultry and fisheries subsectors at least 1.0 percent each. The livestock subsector which shared 16.82 percent posted production growth at 3.67 percent.

The five major commodities produced in Davao Region, namely; banana, palay, coconut, hog and chicken had a combined share of 73.31 percent to the region's total agricultural output in 2016. The region continued to be the country's number one producer of banana and coconut. It ranked fourth in hog production and sixth in chicken production.
