Geographical Background

Zamboanga Peninsula, designated as Region IX, is located in Northwestern of Mindanao, extending toward the Southwest part of Sulu Archipelago and Borneo. It has an area of roughly 18,730.1 square kilometers. The peninsula is connected to the main part of Mindanao through an isthmus situated between Panguil bay and Pagadian bay. The boundary between the peninsula and the mainland is officially marked by the border between Zamboanga del Sur and Lanao del Norte. Zamboanga Peninsula was previously called "Western Mindanao" which was composed of two (2) sub regions. Sub Region IX-A consisted of Basilan, Sulu and Tawi-tawi and Sub Region IX-B consisted of the provinces of Zamboanga del Sur, Zamboanga del Norte and highly urbanized chartered Zamboanga City. With the enactment of Executive Order No. 36 on September 19, 2001, Zamboanga Peninsula covers Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur, Zamboanga Sibugay and highly urbanized chartered Zamboanga City.

In 2016, Zamboanga Peninsula contributed 2.0 percent to the country's Gross Domestic Product. The region's economic performance improved by 4.7 percent. Agriculture, Hunting, Forestry and Fishing sector with its 17.9 percent share in the region's total output decreased by 5.0 percent.

In 2016, palay production at 581,111 metric tons was 12.19 percent lower than the 2015 record. Area harvested was reduced to 155,291 hectares by 5.10 percent. For corn, production increased to 258,951 metric tons by 17.61 percent and area expanded to 145,555 hectares by 10.61 percent.

Agricultural output in Zamboanga Peninsula decreased by 5.14 percent. Production decreases were noted in the following subsectors: crops by 5.76 percent, livestock by 2.03 percent, fisheries by 7.84 percent. Increase in output was noted in poultry subsector at 7.18 percent. The crops subsector had the biggest share of 48.97 percent in region's agricultural production.
